Our family got into native planting through the Kent Conservation District native plant sales. We learned so much about native plants and the benefits. Since then, we’ve loved buying native plants and seeing what thrives in our yard.
Our property is in a heavily wooded area, and it has been an adventure learning how to maintain and help it grow. The front 0.5 acre of our yard was originally wooded with poplar trees that were weak, fell often and were a hazard to our family. We cleared those out in 2022 and have been working on allowing the land to re-wild. We’ve planted native trees and plants but have mostly allowed it to do its own thing. We’ve loved seeing what grows, as well as what birds, bees, and animals make our property their home.
We’ve planted Dogwoods, Hickory, Oak, Cherry, Maple, and White Cedar trees. For perennial flowers, we’ve tried a variety of pollinator plants including milkweed, goldenrod, Black-Eyed Susan, aster, and Culver’s Root. We add something every season.
